A Path to Sustainability in Online Learning Design

Abstract: As we continually strive towards quality of teaching and learning at our Institute, we support innovative technology-driven delivery models designed to create engaging learning environments that prepare our graduates for practice (career readiness). The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the use of a formal project management framework focused on a collegial team approach has contributed to the sustainability of online course development (e-learning) at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). An example of learning design developed to address a specific instructional challenge will be used to illustrate how the project management framework enabled us to focus on innovation and educational integrity of e-learning tools for one program while paving the way for future online development, through the creation of re-usable learning objects, the establishment of a learning object repository, and the use of a sustainable design/development process.
Effects of the Use of the Blog and Discussion Board on Online Teaching and Learning

Abstract: This paper is a report on the findings of a study conducted on a graduate level e-Learning certificate course. The research questions were: (1) To what extent did the use of the Blog and Discussion Board support online teaching and learning? and (2) How could the Blog and Discussion Board be effectively used for online teaching and learning? The data collected for the research project consisted of data from students and from the instructor. The data from the students were survey data from Likert scale questions and open-ended questions; the data from the instructor were the instructor’s journaling that were conducted throughout the quarter. Statistical analysis and content analysis were used to analyze the data.
